For more than a century, the Swiss Art Awards have honoured the work of outstanding artists and borne witness to the vitality of the contemporary Swiss art scene. They represent a long-term commitment on the part of the Confederation to creativity in all its diversity, complexity and freedom.

Art’s various forms evolve, as do the conditions in which they are produced and received. Inaugurated in 1899 at the instigation of the Federal Art Commission, the Swiss Art Awards have constantly adapted to the successive contexts that shaped them, without ever losing sight of their chief mission: to recognise artistic excellence and help artists to build sound professional careers. Today, that role is more crucial than ever.

The art world is at a turning point. Even as the global market contracts, the number of artists is growing, all of them trying to make a living in an uncertain economic environment. Models are undergoing a profound transformation, with calls for fairer remuneration, extended support throughout every phase of artists’ work, and greater sensitivity to the need to balance art with family life. As public institutions established to support culture, we too must rise to that challenge. Backing creativity must always be about more than managing insecurity. We need to rethink the conditions within which culture is produced, to guarantee a viable future for those who practise it.

Amidst the current saving measures, prompted in particular by shift ing national priorities in terms of security, we must never forget that art is also a strategic asset. It structures our imaginaries, questions our systems, and opens up spaces for free thinking. In uncertain times, art remains a pillar of our democracy. It must be allowed to remain free, even when it is not immediately “useful”. The visual arts, and culture in general, are part of an ecosystem of innovation, reflection and social change which is a key strength of a society that embraces the future. It is vital that we continue to acknowledge, publicise and support those who make it their career.

The Swiss Art Awards, and the accompanying exhibition, are born out of that conviction. They are an affirmation of the Confederation’s confidence in artists. They remind us that art is not simply a tool of social cohesion, but also a demanding professional practice that is indispensable to an enlightened society.

The Swiss Art Awards are dedicated to artists, but also to society as a whole. They reflect the values of a Switzerland that is open, critical and receptive to social change. They send a signal. That is why the Federal Off ice of Culture will continue to give it the attention it deserves.
